When Growth Feels Like Doubt: Rethinking Imposter Syndrome
Happy Wednesday!
Welcome to Leadership Unscripted. Each edition, we share 1 Case Study, 1 Framework, 1 Question. These are real moments and practical strategies for rethinking your approach to leadership.
Let’s dive in.
1 Case Study
When Maya was promoted to Director at a biotech company, her results spoke for themselves. She had built high-performing teams, managed cross-functional complexity, and delivered against ambitious targets.
On paper, she was a success story.
However, inside?
“What if I don’t belong in this seat?”
“What if someone realizes I’m not actually ready for this?”
In a coaching session, she finally named it: imposter syndrome. Despite all evidence of her impact, she felt like she was one mistake away from being “found out.”
Her coach didn’t downplay it. They didn’t recite her resume.
Instead, they reframed it:
“This discomfort you’re feeling? It’s not proof you’re not ready. It’s proof you’re growing.”
“Doubt is the doorway to your next level—not a signal to step back.”
That shift changed everything.
She stopped waiting to feel confident.
She started leading while feeling uncertain.
And with every courageous conversation, decision, and stretch, her confidence started catching up to her competence.
Because imposter feelings aren’t a flaw to fix.
They’re a signal you’re stepping into more.

1 Framework
The Growth Reframe Model
Confidence usually follows action, not the other way around. This framework helps you name what’s really going on and take the next step, even if your inner critic isn’t convinced yet.
Normalize – Growth feels messy. Discomfort is part of leveling up. You’re not alone.
Name – What’s the fear really saying? Whose voice is it echoing? What’s it trying to protect you from?
Navigate – Take one small action that challenges the fear. Progress shifts perspective.
Imposter syndrome isn’t a stop sign. It’s a mile marker on the path to your next breakthrough.

1 Question
Growth rarely feels like confidence—it feels like risk. 👉 What if your doubt isn’t a danger sign, but a signal you’re exactly where you need to be?
